Justin Gaethje Takes His Swing at the Internet Invitational Golf Tournament

Justin Gaethje Joins the Golf Roster

UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje is venturing into the golfing arena as he has been officially announced as a participant in Barstool Sports’ Internet Invitational. This highly anticipated golf tournament will take place at Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri, kicking off on October 26, 2023. Gaethje, known for his explosive fighting style inside the octagon, will compete alongside pro golfers and influencers, showcasing his skills on the greens.

A Diverse Field of Participants

The tournament features a unique mix of talent, with 64 competitors expected to participate. While the majority of the roster includes professional golfers, notable athletes from other sports have also been invited. This year, Gaethje is set to share the course with former NBA star Jason Williams and Super Bowl champion coach Jon Gruden. The eclectic mix highlights the event's appeal beyond professional golf, attracting fans from various sports backgrounds.

Returning champions Brad Dalke and Francis Ellis, who previously won the event in 2025, will also be in attendance, aiming to defend their title. The tournament takes on added significance as it comes just after the tragic passing of Cody Franke, who was part of the winning team the previous year. Gaethje’s participation, along with these returning champions, promises to bring a captivating energy to the competition.

Gaethje's Growing Passion for Golf

Justin Gaethje's enthusiasm for golf is well-documented, as he has been sharing his golf journey through videos on his YouTube channel. His commitment to the game is evident, having participated in various tournaments, including a celebrity golf event organized by his UFC rival, Max Holloway, this past July. Despite not finishing in the top 50 at the celebrity tournament, Gaethje’s determination to improve his performance reflects his competitive spirit.

What’s Next for Gaethje in MMA

While Gaethje immerses himself in the world of golf, the UFC lightweight division is rife with challengers eager for a title shot. With expectations that he may not defend his title until 2027, Gaethje has ample time to focus on honing his golf skills. However, the competition remains fierce in the division, with potential challengers like Holloway, Ilia Topuria—who Gaethje overcame to clinch his championship title—and the current number one contender, Arman Tsarukyan, all waiting in the wings.

Strategic Maneuvers Beyond the Octagon

Gaethje's switch to the golf course signals not just a personal interest but also a strategic move to increase his visibility and fan engagement. Participating in such high-profile events allows him to maintain his popularity and keep fans engaged while remaining on the sidelines of MMA. This kind of cross-sport participation has become a trend among fighters looking to capitalize on their fame, especially during periods of inactivity. It’s a testament to Gaethje’s understanding of brand management in sports.

The Bigger Picture: Bridging Sports Communities

The Internet Invitational is more than just a golf tournament; it serves as a platform that bridges diverse sports communities and engages fans outside traditional sporting events. By featuring athletes from a variety of sports background, it fosters a unique camaraderie and interest among fans. For athletes like Gaethje, it provides an opportunity to establish a more personal connection with their audience, showcasing a different side of themselves beyond their athletic prowess.

Final Thoughts

As the countdown to the tournament begins, the excitement around Gaethje’s participation only heightens. With his competitive nature and growing love for golf, “The Highlight” will undoubtedly bring his trademark intensity to the course. Beyond the fairways, his focus on enhancing his golf game could very well serve as a refreshing chapter in a career that's already marked by headline-grabbing moments inside the octagon. It’ll be fascinating to see how he balances both worlds in the coming months.
